What do we know about our body? That it consists
of bones and soft tissues that work under the direction of a very
advanced computer – our brain. We also know that each organ
or tissue is composed of millions of cells, of billions upon billions
of molecules and atoms. In addition, water molecules surround these
atoms and molecules, and that there exists constant movement of
these atoms and molecules which can be observed under new high resolution
microscopes.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as the state
of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely
the absence of disease or infirmity. Also, WHO distinguishes "Biological
effects" from "Health effects" by defining that not
every biological effect can cause health effects. More and more
scientists and health professionals believe magnetic fields used
for therapeutic purposes are capable of initiating biological responses
that help to restore normal functioning of certain organs/systems
in our body. Of course, this requires that the health problems are
within the normal range of biological variation and physiological
compensation. Deciding whether the biological and/or physiological
changes may have genuine health consequences depends, in part, upon
whether they are reversible.
There are a series of alternative therapies recognized in the United
States. The National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine
has been authorized to coordinate and fund research in this area.
Magnetic field therapy is a relatively new and not fully accepted
modality in Alternative Medicine. The main reason is that the use
of any physical modality requires approval by FDA and the process
of collecting convincing evidence is a long and expensive one. It
should also be noted, that outside the United States magnetotherapy
is well recognized and frequently used to treat variety of health
problems from skin diseases through wound and fracture healing,
diabetics, Parkinson’s, epilepsy as well as various types
of cancer.
The world of Magnetotherapy is best represented in the recent book
BIOELECTROMAGNETIC
MEDICINE edited by Dr. Paul Rosch, President of the American
Institute of Stress and Dr. Marko Markov, Director of Research International,
Buffalo. Within 850 pages, 86 of the most recognized world experts
described the general principles of magnetotherapy and particular
application for treatment of specific diseases, injuries and pathologies.
